about

Problem Radical(s) is the first-ever release of one of Object Collection’s operas. Aggressive and unrelenting, the template for their vision of “opera-in-overdrive” (The Wire) is laid out here.

Written from 2008-2009, Problem Radical(s) mixes everyday radical acts, a sprawling sculpture, massive inflating tarps, industrious performers, and hardcore noise. The piece is completely modular, with each performance (and rehearsal) using a different vocal order and completely unique musical material. The foundation is fundamentally and intentionally unsound.

The instrumental music mashes together fuzzed-out bass explosions, table-top guitar drumming, microtonal drones, field recordings, and heavily processed samples from punk rock and free-jazz heroes (incl. The Dead Kennedys, Sun Ra, The Replacements, Miles Davis, Black Flag).

The changeability extends to the set, lights and video: each night, the performers navigate an ever-expanding, unstable installation. Musicians and singers reassemble the modular electronic and instrumental score, evoking American radical thinkers, hardcore noise, civic activists, and maneuverable personal blimps.

NOTE: all purchases of this album come with a video link to a separate, complete performance of Problem Radical(s) (from April 29, 2009). This performance is completely unique, with a contrasting order of vocal sections and thoroughly different musical material. Find the video link under "Bonus Items".

Object Collection New York

OBJECT COLLECTION was founded in 2004 by writer/director Kara Feely and composer/musician Travis Just. Based in Brooklyn, the group operates within the intersecting practices of performance, experimental music and theater. We are concerned with simultaneity, complexity, and radicality, combining dense layers of text, notation, objects and processes. We value accumulation above cohesion. ... more
